What is Toastmasters?

Toastmasters is a training and educational organisation which teaches it’s members communication and leadership skills. 

It is the largest and most successful organisation of its type in the world. Founded in 1924, there are now more than 14,000 Clubs in 150 countries world-wide.

Who attends Toastmasters?

Members come from all walks of life – from students to retirees.  The only restriction is that an individual must be at least 18 years of age to join Toastmasters.  As a member, you’ll learn and practice in a friendly, supportive environment with people who are there for the same reason you are – to become better communicators!

What happens at a typical meeting?

Scheduled to last for 2 hours, our meetings are divided into two main sections: a Table Topics session where members practice the art of impromptu speaking and a Toastmaster session where members deliver prepared speeches. Come along and see what Toastmasters has to offer. 

Visitors are most welcome and there is no obligation to join – you have nothing to lose except your fear of public speaking!

What can Toastmasters do for me?

Toastmasters will give you the skills and confidence you need to effectively express yourself in any situation.  Toastmasters helps members:

  • learn to think quickly and clearly under pressure
  • effectively develop and present ideas
  • deliver better presentations
  • develop their leadership skills
  • conduct effective meetings
  • give and receive constructive feedback
  • acquire increased ability to motivate and persuade, making you more effective as a supervisor or manager.
  • Whatever you goals, Toastmasters can help you become the speaker and leader you want to become!

What resources are available?

As a member you will receive manuals to guide you in your speaking development as well as a subscription to the monthly Toastmaster magazine.  The Club is also building a comprehensive library of books, videos and DVDs.  However, the greatest resource is the constructive evaluations and positive feedback you will receive from other members.  As a Club, our role is to provide an enjoyable, positive learning environment to help you achieve your goals!

How long does it take to become a great speaker?

The Toastmasters Program is a self-paced program, so it all depends on your personal goals.  At every meeting you will perform different assignments which will help you develop your confidence and skills.  You’ll introduce speakers, deliver prepared speeches, conduct the meeting, or one of many other roles.  You’ll improve by speaking regularly and with the positive evaluations and fun Club environment, your speaking growth will be an enjoyable experience!

Does it cost money to join Toastmasters?

It costs nothing to visit our Club, and you can visit as often as you like!

As a non-profit organisation, our aim is to provide an enjoyable, affordable way of gaining great communication skills.  When you decide to participate in the Toastmasters program you  need to become a member.  Your joining fee and siz monthly membership fee gives you access to Toastmasters resources and educational pathways.

Does your club conduct any public speaking courses?

Yes, we do!  We conduct an intensive six-week Public Speaking Course every six months.  This popular course, known as Speechcraft, will help you gain confidence in all aspects of public speaking, including written and impromptu speeches. 

Are there any other clubs in the Blue Mountains area?

There are two other Toastmasters Clubs in the Blue Mountains, one based in Katoomba and one in Springwood.  There is also clubs based in Penrith and Windsor.
